The Smashing Machine, a new film directed by Benny Safdie and presented by A24, has revealed its initial imagery, featuring Dwayne Johnson in a character transformation so deep he's hardly recognizable.
This eagerly awaited sports drama paints a vivid portrait of Mark Kerr's life, a former wrestling and mixed martial arts icon. Kerr, celebrated for winning the UFC Heavyweight Tournament twice and claiming the NCAA Division I Championship, among numerous other honors, has his storied career and complex personal life brought to the silver screen. The movie is inspired by the 2002 HBO documentary that shares its title, exploring the highs and lows of Kerr's journey.
Joining the cast are Emily Blunt as Dawn Staples, Lyndsy Gavin taking on the role of Elizabeth Coleman, Oleksandr Usyk portraying the ex-MMA fighter Igor Vovchanchyn, and Ryan Bader as Kerr's mentor Mark Coleman. Currently under production, the film is slated to complete shooting by August 1.
In discussions with Variety, Johnson shared insights into his ambitions for the project, "Benny aims to craft and continually seeks to redefine storytelling with narratives that are raw and genuine, featuring characters that resonate authentically while being at times stark and profound." He continued, "At this juncture in my career, I'm eager to explore new boundaries and tackle roles that challenge me in novel ways. My aspiration is to contribute to cinema that is significant, delving into themes of human experience, adversity, and resilience."
