HBO Max Sets Sights on Global Expansion with Upcoming Launches in Europe
- 287
HBO Max is set to expand its reach by launching in additional countries starting in May. The company has confirmed that its streaming service will begin its expansion by rolling out in Poland, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium from May 21. This initial wave of expansion will be succeeded by launches in the Nordics, Iberia, and Central and Eastern Europe.
This expansion marks a significant move in HBO's strategy to make its streaming service more widely available. However, audiences in the UK might have to wait longer for the service to become available there. The delay is due to an existing agreement between Warner Bros., HBO's parent company, and telecommunications giant Sky, which ensures all HBO content premieres on Sky/Now TV platforms until 2026. Despite potential changes in this deal, Sky may continue to be the primary platform for HBO releases in the UK due to life-of-series agreements.
In light of its impending expansion, HBO also announced that the Paris Olympic Games will be streamed exclusively on the Max platform in regions where it is accessible. Meanwhile, viewers in the UK are expected to watch the Games on traditional terrestrial television networks.
