Microscale Version of the Lesser-known Atari Computer with 25 Pre-installed Games Makes a Comeback

Noted microconsole creators, Retro Games Ltd., are gearing up to co-launch with Plaion the "THE400 Mini" console worldwide on March 28, 2024. Mimicking the landmark Atari 400 microcomputer, they've shrunken the device for a modern audience while preserving classic Atari games. Previously, Plaion's collaboration with Retro Games Ltd. on the Atari 2600+ made a significant impact in the market. Pre-orders for THE400 Mini, priced at $119.99 / £99.99 (around AU$179), are currently open.

THE400 Mini sports a handy, HD-ready design. It easily connects to a television or computer screen via HDMI, delivering a 720p image. Users can choose between 50Hz or 60Hz refresh rates. In addition, a replica of the revolutionary Atari CX-40 joystick will be included. Moreover, the console supports various other gaming controllers and keyboards through its five integrated USB ports.

While some may miss the physical cartridge experience, THE400 Mini offers a compelling alternative with its reliance on emulation technology. The console comes with 25 pre-loaded games featuring favorites like Berzerk!, Millipede, and Miner 2049er. Players can supplement these with more compatible games via a USB stick.

The mini console promises an impressive gaming experience with its added rewind mode, allowing players to revert their moves up to 30 seconds back. It also offers up to four save states per game, ensuring an enjoyable intermittent gameplay. However, buyers should be aware that a separate power adapter is required to run the device using the provided USB power cable.

Those seeking to re-experience the magic of retro gaming can also explore the Evercade EXP and Evercade VS consoles, known for their custom cartridges hosting a plethora of classic games designed by various developers and publishers.
